Air conditioning on the Costa del Sol tends to be ignored for months and then asked to perform heroically the moment temperatures rise. Unsurprisingly, this is when neglected systems choose to complain.
For most homes, servicing the system in spring before sustained summer use is the sensible option. It gives you time to resolve worn parts, blocked drainage, dirty filters or weak performance before technicians become busiest.
The exact work depends on the system, but a professional service commonly includes filter and coil checks, drainage inspection, testing operating temperatures and reviewing the outdoor unit for dirt, obstruction or visible damage.
Homes close to the sea are exposed to salt-laden air, which can accelerate corrosion on outdoor equipment. Villas surrounded by vegetation can also collect leaves, dust and debris around external units. Keeping the area clear helps airflow and allows problems to be seen earlier.
An AC system that still runs can already be performing inefficiently. Preventive servicing is generally easier to schedule than an emergency visit during a July heatwave, when every other homeowner has arrived at the same conclusion simultaneously.
For second homes, include AC maintenance in the property’s recurring service calendar so the system is checked before arrival rather than after the first uncomfortable night.
