HECHÍA INSIGHTS · Hiring a professional
Three professionals send three different prices. One includes materials, one quotes an hourly rate, and the third says “from” without explaining the final total. Choosing becomes difficult because the numbers describe different things.
When comparing home-service quotes on the Costa del Sol, the most useful first step is to send everyone the same brief. Whether you need a painter in Marbella, a cleaner in Estepona or maintenance for a home in Benahavís, a shared scope makes the proposals easier to assess.
Describe the result you want, the property’s location and the current situation. Include photographs, approximate dimensions where relevant, access restrictions and preferred dates. Explain whether you live at the property or will organise access through someone else.
For a repair, describe the symptoms rather than presenting an assumed diagnosis. “The indoor unit drips when running” is more useful than declaring that a particular component needs replacing. Let the specialist explain whether an inspection is required before a repair price can be confirmed.
Ask which model applies. A clear inspection fee can be more useful than an unrealistically precise repair price offered before anyone has seen the fault. Check whether that fee is credited against later work; do not assume it is.
If one contractor includes something the others omit, ask for revised proposals. You should be able to explain why the total differs before deciding which option gives better value.
Ask about comparable work and how the provider would approach your property. A beautiful kitchen renovation photograph does not tell you whether someone is the right specialist for a fault in a pool pump. Request evidence of appropriate qualifications and insurance where relevant to the work, and clarify who will actually attend.
Reviews are one piece of information. Look for detail about communication, timeliness and resolving issues rather than relying only on a star rating. Do not assume every provider on a platform has the same experience, availability or terms.
Hidden damage and changing scope can affect an otherwise sensible quote. Set an approval process: the provider explains the additional issue, sends the proposed work and price, and obtains agreement before proceeding where practical. Agree a separate contact procedure for urgent situations.
Remote owners should nominate one person to approve decisions. Conflicting instructions from an owner, guest and keyholder make even simple jobs harder. Record decisions in one written thread and retain the final quote and invoice.
Arrange a walkthrough or an agreed photo report. For painting, inspect the agreed surfaces and note touch-ups. For cleaning, use the booked room-by-room checklist. For equipment work, ask the technician to explain what was done and any next steps or care instructions.
Keep unresolved items in one short list with agreed follow-up dates. Read our painting quote guide and deep-cleaning checklist for examples of a more specific brief.
For planned work, two or three comparable proposals can help reveal scope differences. For a small or urgent task, confirm the call-out terms and availability first.
No. Assess the specification, relevant experience, communication and completion arrangements alongside price.
Your location, service required, a concise description, useful photos if the form supports them, and your preferred dates. Availability and final scope should be confirmed with the provider.
